While some Indigenous youth in situations of adversity can experience the impact of negative behaviours and health outcomes; others do not. This study confirmed the complexity of wellbeing and resilience for Aboriginal young people in the study sites. Belonging, being strong, recognising risk and maintaining positivity were significant to Aboriginal youth. The importance of connections, culture and community to Aboriginal youth also exposed distress from the loss of those relationships and connections. Contemporary measures of social and emotional wellbeing (Strong Souls) and resilience (Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale) require further research before recommended for use in Australia with Aboriginal youth by clinicians and researchers.
