This chapter from the book "Youth Crime, Youth Justice and Children's Courts in NSW" (LexisNexis, 2023) focusses on young people in detention but takes a rights approach. Dr Lisa Ewenson, a qualitative social science researcher with extensive social work and legal experience focused on the promotion of human rights, also draws on fieldwork conducted in New South Wales with young people formerly in youth justice centres, and adopts a child rights perspective in reviewing contemporary narratives of youth detention. Ewenson draws on the data collected from interviewing 12 young people who had exited youth detention in New South Wales.
