The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) funded Top End Tobacco Project aimed to reduce tobacco smoking in three remote Aboriginal communities plus several homelands in the Top End (Arnhem Land) of the Northern Territory (NT) over a five year period (2007 - 2012).

The project included:

  • baseline surveys of tobacco use in each community with follow-up
  • ongoing measurement of tobacco sales
  • support for community-developed strategies to reduce and prevent tobacco use
  • improved access to nicotine replacement therapy (NRT)
  • employment of local research workers
  • provision of regular feedback to each community and key stakeholders
  • support for capacity building of local health workers.
