Illawarra Local Aboriginal Land Council

The Djeera (Mt Keira) Aboriginal Cultural Connections Project, "Djeera Project", has been identified by the Illawarra Local Aboriginal Land Council as a priority initiative to improve the knowledge of both the local Aboriginal community as well as broader community of the high significance of Mt Keira in the cultural frameworks of local custodians. Djeera is a prominent feature of the escarpment which runs north-south through the Illawarra region.

The Djeera project aims to enable the local Aboriginal community to reclaim this important Aboriginal place as an area of learning and cultural significance and protect it for future generations. Information will be gathered from historical archives and by documenting oral histories and contemporary connections.

As informed by the Aboriginal community, these data sets will provide a culturally appropriate narrative of place and detail the cultural values and connections held by the Aboriginal community with Djeera. In consultation with the local Aboriginal community educational packages will be created for schools and other organisations. These packages seek to educate the broader community of the significance and importance of Djeera to Aboriginal people and work towards building respect, recognition and appreciation of this culturally significant place.
